The Board of Appeal for Education is an authority that is similar to a court of law in that it may hear appeals against certain decisions relating to the education system. The Chair and Vice-Chair of the Board are qualified lawyers with experience as judges. The rest of the Board is made up of an education expert, chief school medical officer, a psychologist, a special needs educator, a head teacher and a former Chief Legal Adviser.

How do I appeal?

  • Check that the decision may be appealed.
  • Send the appeal to the body that made the decision, not straight to the Board of Appeal for Education.
  • The appeal shall have been received within three weeks of your receiving the decision.
  • State which decision you are appealing, the change you wish to see and the reason for this.
  • State your name, personal identity number and contact details.
  • Sign the appeal.
  • The appeal as well as other documentation you submit will be placed in the public domain and become available for anyone to read. The decisions of the Board are a matter of public record.
